Connecting Dr.. Deming's 14 Points to Innovation Engineering's 6 Principles

Good Morning Innovation Leaders, As our annual Deming week celebration comes to an end -- I thought I'd post some things to get you thinking.

The following is from Innovation Engineering Black Belt Brian Werneke.  Brian looked to align Dr. Deming's 14 points with the Innovation Engineering principles for the LEADER and the WORKER. LEADER

1) Constancy of Purpose

# 1 - Constancy of purpose # 7 - Institute leadership #14 - Put everybody in the company to work to accomplish the transformation

2) Meaningfully Unique

# 4 - End the practice of awarding business on the basis of price tag alone # 6 - Institute training for a skill # 10 - Eliminate slogans, exhortations, arbitrary targets # 12a - Remove barriers to pride of workmanship

3) Systems Thinking

# 2 - Adopt the New Philosophy. # 3 - Cease dependence on mass inspection # 5 - Improve constantly and forever the system of production and service # 9 - Break down barriers between staff areas # 13 - Education and growth

WORKER

1) Stimulus Mining

# 6 - Institute training for a skill # 13 - Education and growth

2) Diversify Thinking

#9 - Break down barriers between staff areas 

3) Drive out Fear
# 8 - Drive out fear
Deming Cycle - Plan, Do, Study, Act

The two that are missing - are the two that have been the hardest to achieve in the Western World

# 11Eliminate numerical quotas for the workforce

# 12B - Drop the annual merit review

In truth if we do #7 - Institute Leadership and focus on what is Meaningful they are not needed.
