Good Morning Innovation Pioneers, The Innovation Engineering movement have validated a reliable and reproducible system for increasing speed and decreasing risk with the "fuzzy front end" of innovation. And, by increasing clarity at the front end we are seeing a 250% increase in development success.
Despite that - development remains the greatest constraint on our ability to increase speed and decrease risk. It's also where all the time, energy and money are invested.
Steve Jobs articulated the importance of development in the video "The Lost Interview"
You know, one of the things that really hurt Apple was after I left John Sculley got a very serious disease. It’s the disease of thinking that a really great idea is 90% of the work. And if you just tell all these other people “here’s this great idea,” then of course they can go off and make it happen.
And the problem with that is that there’s just a tremendous amount of craftsmanship in between a great idea and a great product. And as you evolve that great idea, it changes and grows. It never comes out like it starts because you learn a lot more as you get into the subtleties of it. And you also find there are tremendous tradeoffs that you have to make. There are just certain things you can’t make electrons do. There are certain things you can’t make plastic do. Or glass do. Or factories do. Or robots do.
Designing a product is keeping five thousand things in your brain and fitting them all together in new and different ways to get what you want. And every day you discover something new that is a new problem or a new opportunity to fit these things together a little differently.
And it’s that process that is the magic.
The need to make systemic improvements in DEVELOPMENT is so great that 2014 hasbeen declared the year of DEVELOPMENT Innovation for the Innovation Engineering Movement. To that end our annual conference this year will focus on development --- the theme is The 94% Solution to Increasing DEVELOPMENT Speed & Decreasing Risk.
At the conference we will introduce the 5 Pillars for Development system improvement. In addition to human systems for smarter development we will also introduce the first generation of digital tools in support of the 5 Pillars for Development systems.
Sadly, we are forecasting that pre release registrations by members of the IE Network - corporate partners and university partners (who are registering this week) will sell out the event by the end of this week. Therefore, there will be no public registration to attend in person. If you are unsure of your registration - or are an IE Network partner that has been missed contact Corie at the Eureka! Ranch.
To make the event available to a broader audience we've established a series of 4 webinars. You only need to register once - then can sign in for any of the sessions.
Monday April 14 - Morning Session - Afternoon Session
Tuesday April 15 - Morning Session - Afternoon Session
All presentations will be broadcast using advanced broadcasting technology. Actual content for each session will be announced as we get closer to the event. Note - the webinar has a cap as well - so if you want to attend via webinar - I suggest you register sooner rather than later. The registration link is below.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
Rock & Roll
p.s. At this years IE Conference - in person and via Webinar - there will be CORE innovations in all five Development Pillars. And there just might be.... One more thing...
